Hey, we’ve all been there. One drink leads to another, the night becomes sort of a blur, and now it’s the next morning (or afternoon,) and you’re lying there feeling all kinds of awful.
Yep, you have a hangover.
All of the experiences the night before might have seemed fun at the time, but here you are now, lying in your bed (hopefully,) and wallowing in the current misery that has resulted from your eventful evening. Your boatless booze cruise may have been the sole intention of your evening, or perhaps the result of getting caught up in the moment. Either way, your hangover doesn’t care. It’s here, it’s real, and it’s no fun at all.
Making a Hangover Disappear
So how do you make it go away? You probably have things you need to be doing that day that do not involve lying around feeling terrible. Things such as cleaning your house, running some errands, doing some laundry, or perhaps even the worst thing to do after an intense night of drinking: work.
You’ve probably heard plenty of remedy myths people swear by that magically alleviate even the worst of hangovers. Drinking pickle juice, eating greasy food, drinking sports beverages, drinking coffee, taking vitamins, or even drinking more alcohol are all supposedly things one should do when facing the music the next day.
While these may or may not work, there is one method that is always sure to do the trick, and that is sleep.
Why Sleeping is Your Best Friend During a Hangover
Sleeping after a long night of drinking is the best thing you can do for yourself by a wide margin. Alcohol is a drug after all, and drinking alcohol can have stimulating effects initially, but as it works through your body the effects become more like a depressant. This is why you might find it easy to fall asleep in your inebriated state.
But falling asleep easily doesn’t necessarily guarantee that your will have quality sleep. In fact, as the effects wear off, minor withdrawal-like symptoms can actually jolt you awake on and off, leading to a disruption in your REM cycle, which ultimately leads to a lower quality of sleep. Regardless, even the worst sleep is more beneficial than any alternative. It’s also much easier to be unconscious, which is the logical way to avoid the feelings that have resulted from your hangover.
Three Tips For Better Hangover Sleep
Now that you know the most effective way to fight your hangover, here are a few tips to make sure that fight is effective (from the comfort of your bed.)
1. Drink plenty of water
If you can, be sure to have some water by your bedside. Drink it as often as you can. That includes before actually falling asleep if possible. If you keep waking up repeatedly during your sleep, you’ll find it hard to actually find the motivation to get up. Keeping water within arm’s reach is the best way to ensure that you start to feel better, quicker.
2. Turn the lights off, and close the curtains
There’s a good chance that you probably crash landed into your bed with zero regard for the surrounding environment. If you did, the morning light will have an effect on your sleep, and will most likely wake you up before your preferred time. Closing the curtains or shade on your windows beforehand is obviously a good idea, but if you wake up to them open, close them immediately and get back to bed.
3. Leave the T.V. off.
It might be tempting to turn on some Netflix and provide yourself with a distraction from your woes. If falling asleep and getting a REM cycle started is the ultimate goal however, it’s best to leave it off. The artificial light and background noise can provide a hindrance to your mind and overall relaxation, and cause you to sleep much more lightly.
